My story ~ How I found Bowen
Marla Hasquet, CBT
I was at a wedding reception in 2009. While visiting with the other ladies at the table, one lady said she was the Bride’s Bowen Therapist. After her explanation of Bowen, I must have had a skeptical look on my face, because she said to me, “Okay, do you have any specific place in your body that you have pain?” I responded with, “yes, my shoulders.” I told her how over the past 10 years my shoulders had progressively become more painful. She did 3 Bowen moves on each shoulder. I didn’t think too much of it at the time, but as I was driving home the next day, I was amazed at how much better my shoulders felt.
I really could not believe that so little could help alleviate my pain. When I got home I did a little research on Bowen. After a year of ignoring the nagging voice in the back of my head telling me to go do this, I finally did! The closest location to take classes for me was Calgary, so I enrolled in the Mount Royal University. The Bowen Therapy technique is the same whether taught in the United States, Australia, Canada or in any of the other 30 countries in the world where Bowen is present. It wasn’t until I felt relief from my shoulder pain and experienced the increase in range of motion in my arms and shoulders, that I realized how much I had been compensating for the pain. I love how Bowen helps me live pain free. I have been a Certified Bowen Practitioner since 2011. To remain certified, I am required to take 16 credit hours of continuing education each year.
